What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist. GLP-1 agonist was first isolated as an effective diabetes medication that boosted insulin production by the pancreas. Semaglutide was recently approved by the FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) as a prescription weight loss aid.

How does Semaglutide work?

Semaglutide (GLP-1 agonist) stimulates the pancreas to increase insulin and causes the stomach to empty more slowly. Slowing of gastric emptying helps create a longer sense of fullness. This full feeling helps decrease appetite and leads to consuming less food than usual. Semaglutide helps improve other areas of your overall health by stabilizing and controlling blood sugar levels.

Is Semaglutide right for me?

Semaglutide is an appropriate medication for people who have a body mass index of 30 or more; or those with other medical conditions where weight loss would be beneficial to overall health. Semaglutide injections are not an appropriate treatment for people with only a small amount of weight to lose. It is not a miracle cure and is designed to be used over an extended period. Semaglutide can take up to 60 days to begin controlling appetite. It is extremely important to adhere to the medication titration dosing schedule.

Contraindications include having family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), thyroid cancer, or having an endocrine system condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

What are side effects of Semaglutide?

Side effects can include loss of appetite, light headedness or dizziness, lethargy, gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, constipation, and diarrhea. Serious side effects include thyroid tumors or cancer. Other side effects can occur and should be discussed with your provider. Tell your provider if you get a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath.
