What is BOTOX Cosmetics?
BOTOX® is an FDA approved medication from Abbvie that has been used for therapeutic medical purposes for more than 50 years. BOTOX® Cosmetic was the first neurotoxin approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2002 to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), forehead and crow’s feet in people 18 to 65 years of age. Neurotoxins work by relaxing the targeted muscle to prevent repetitive creasing of the skin, which is the cause of deepening expression lines. Treatment takes three to ten days to become effective and usually lasts three to four months (results may vary). What is Xeomin®?
Xeomin® is a botulinum toxin type A from Merz Pharmaceuticals that is FDA approved for treating the glabellar lines in adults ages 18 to 65, and results may last 3-4 months. The main distinction between Xeomin® and Botox® is how they’re manufactured. Xeomin® is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, while Botox is composed of a complex mixture of proteins. Essentially, this means that Xeomin® doesn’t have any additives, so it may be more suitable for those who have sensitivities to Botox®.
What is Dysport®
Dysport® is a botulinum toxin type A from Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals that is FDA approved for treating glabellar lines in adults ages 18 to 65, and results may last 3-4 months. After injection, Dysport® appears to have a greater spread effect, leading to a more diffuse distribution of clinical effects. A single unit of Dysport® is about one-third the potency of Botox. This doesn’t mean that Botox® works better, but rather that more Dysport® is needed to achieve the same effect. As a trade-off, the price of a Dysport unit is less than that of a Botox unit, so you’ll spend about the same to achieve similar results.
What is DAXXIFY®?
Daxxify® is a botulinum toxin type A from Revance Therapeutics that has FDA approval for treatment of glabellar lines. The main difference between Botox® and Daxxify® is that the toxin in Daxxify®, which temporarily blocks the signals to the muscle, is attached to a protein—helping to extend Daxxify’s® effects on treated muscles. In fact, clinical trials found that Daxxify® results can last between 6-9 months, potentially lasting 2-3 times longer than Botox® for some patients. Additionally, Daxxify® is the first injectable neurotoxin formulated using a novel peptide as a stabilizer, meaning it does not contain human or animal byproducts.
Even though each of these neurotoxins are similar in action, they all have nuanced mechanisms of action. BOTOX® Cosmetic is the longest on the market with FDA approval. Consult with your provider to discover which option is best for you.
