KYBELLA treatment for submental fat at Skin & Sculpt Medical Spa

Targets Submental Fat

Designed specifically for fullness below the chin, not for general weight loss or body fat reduction.

Custom Treatment Plan

Your provider maps the area and recommends a plan based on anatomy, treatment goals, and candidacy.

Profile-Focused Care

KYBELLA® may help refine the visual transition between the chin, jawline, and neck in appropriate candidates.

A Non-Surgical Approach to Submental Fullness

A double chin can be caused by genetics, anatomy, weight changes, aging, or natural fat distribution. For some clients, fullness below the chin remains even with healthy habits, making the jawline and profile look softer than desired.

KYBELLA® may help appropriate adults improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat under the chin without surgery. Treatment is performed in-office and customized based on the amount and distribution of submental fat.

KYBELLA® can be a standalone treatment or part of a broader profile-refinement plan that may include dermal fillers, Botox and wrinkle relaxers, microneedling, laser treatments, AgeJET™, facials and dermaplaning, or CoolSculpting® Elite depending on your goals.

What Is KYBELLA®?

KYBELLA® is an FDA-approved prescription injectable treatment for adults with moderate to severe fat below the chin, also known as submental fat. The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid.

Deoxycholic acid is a molecule that helps break down dietary fat in the body. When injected into targeted fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA® works by destroying fat cells in the treated area. After treatment, the body gradually processes the treated fat cells over time.

KYBELLA® is not a weight loss treatment and is not intended for treatment areas outside the submental region. A consultation is required to determine whether your fullness is caused by fat, skin laxity, muscle anatomy, or another factor.

How Does KYBELLA® Work Under the Chin?

KYBELLA® is injected into the subcutaneous fat tissue below the chin using a customized injection pattern. The treatment area is assessed, mapped, and injected according to your anatomy and treatment goals.

Swelling is expected after treatment and may temporarily make the area look fuller before it begins to refine. Your provider will discuss what is normal, what to expect, and when to contact the office.

How KYBELLA® Works

Treatment is planned around your anatomy, the amount of submental fat, skin quality, comfort level, and goals.

1. Assess

Your provider evaluates the submental area to confirm whether the fullness is caused by treatable fat and whether skin quality supports your goals.

2. Map + Treat

The treatment area is marked, and KYBELLA® is injected into targeted submental fat beneath the chin.

3. Gradual Refinement

Swelling is expected after treatment. Over time, the body gradually processes treated fat cells as the profile begins to refine.

What Can KYBELLA® Help Improve?

KYBELLA® is designed for submental fullness under the chin. It may be appropriate for clients who want a more defined-looking profile without surgical liposuction.

Double Chin

KYBELLA® may help improve the appearance of moderate to severe fullness below the chin, commonly called a double chin.

Submental Fat

Treatment targets fat beneath the chin, not loose skin, muscle laxity, or general body weight.

Profile Definition

Reducing submental fullness may help the lower face and neck profile appear more refined in appropriate candidates.

Jawline Transition

By addressing under-chin fullness, KYBELLA® may help improve the visual transition between the chin, jawline, and neck.

Non-Surgical Contouring

KYBELLA® offers a non-surgical injectable option for adults who are not ready for or interested in surgical fat removal.

Customized Chin Area Plan

Some clients may benefit from KYBELLA® alone, while others may need fillers, skin tightening, or another approach depending on anatomy.

Do I Need KYBELLA®, Chin Filler, Skin Tightening, CoolSculpting® or Surgery?

Under-chin fullness can come from different causes. KYBELLA® is best suited for submental fat. If your concern is loose skin, weak chin projection, jawline structure, muscle banding, or broader body fat, another treatment may be more appropriate.

KYBELLA® May Be Better For:

  • Moderate to severe fat below the chin
  • Double chin caused by submental fat
  • Clients wanting a non-surgical injectable option
  • Gradual profile refinement
  • Clients who understand swelling and multiple sessions may be needed

Another Treatment May Be Better For:

  • Loose or crepey skin under the chin
  • Significant skin laxity
  • Weak chin projection or profile imbalance
  • Prominent neck bands
  • General weight loss goals
  • Patients seeking faster or surgical-level fat removal

Your provider may recommend KYBELLA®, chin or jawline filler, wrinkle relaxers, laser treatments, AgeJET™, CoolSculpting® Elite, or referral for a surgical consultation depending on your anatomy and goals.

Who Is a Good Candidate for KYBELLA®?

KYBELLA® may be a good fit for adults with moderate to severe submental fat who want a non-surgical approach to improving the appearance of a double chin.

You May Be a Candidate If You:

  • Have moderate to severe fullness below the chin
  • Feel your double chin affects your profile
  • Want a non-surgical injectable option
  • Have enough submental fat to treat safely
  • Have realistic expectations about swelling and gradual results
  • Understand that multiple sessions may be needed
  • Are not looking for a general weight loss treatment

KYBELLA® May Not Be Right If You:

  • Have an active infection at the treatment site
  • Have significant loose skin instead of treatable fat
  • Have prominent platysmal bands or anatomy that may affect results
  • Have difficulty swallowing or a history of dysphagia
  • Have had prior surgery or cosmetic treatment in the chin or neck area that changes anatomy
  • Have bleeding concerns or take blood-thinning medications
  • Are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • Have medical factors your provider determines require caution

A consultation is required to determine candidacy. Your provider will review your health history, anatomy, goals, previous treatments, medications, and the quality of your skin and underlying tissue.

Your KYBELLA® Appointment at Skin & Sculpt

1. Consultation

We discuss your double chin concerns, profile goals, health history, prior treatments, medications, and expectations.

2. Submental Assessment

Your provider evaluates fat distribution, skin laxity, neck anatomy, jawline transition, and whether KYBELLA® is appropriate.

3. Mapping + Treatment

The treatment area is marked, and KYBELLA® is injected into targeted fat below the chin using a customized plan.

4. Aftercare + Follow-Up

You receive aftercare instructions, swelling expectations, and guidance on when to return for additional sessions if needed.

How Many KYBELLA® Sessions Will I Need?

KYBELLA® is typically performed as a series. Some clients may begin with two treatments, while others may need more depending on submental fat, anatomy, desired result, and individual response.

FDA labeling allows up to six single treatments spaced no less than one month apart. Your Skin & Sculpt provider will recommend a realistic treatment plan during consultation based on your goals and candidacy.

First Treatment

The first session begins the fat-reduction process. Swelling is expected and can be noticeable.

Follow-Up Visit

Your provider evaluates your response, swelling timeline, and whether another session is recommended.

Maintenance

Once the desired result is reached, retreatment is not typically needed for the treated fat cells, though weight changes and aging can affect your profile.

When Will I See KYBELLA® Results?

KYBELLA® results are gradual. Swelling is expected after treatment and may temporarily make the under-chin area look fuller before it improves.

Day of Treatment

The treatment area is injected in-office. Swelling, tenderness, redness, numbness, or bruising may begin.

First 1–2 Weeks

Swelling can be the most noticeable during this period. This is a common part of the treatment response.

4–6 Weeks

Your provider may assess your progress and determine whether another session is recommended.

Multiple Sessions

Many clients need more than one treatment to reach their desired profile refinement.

Individual results vary based on anatomy, fat distribution, skin laxity, treatment plan, swelling response, and body composition.

KYBELLA® Aftercare and Recovery

Aftercare instructions may vary based on your treatment plan. Your provider will give you specific guidance before you leave your appointment.

Common Aftercare Guidance

  • Expect swelling under the chin after treatment
  • Use cold compresses only as directed
  • Avoid rubbing or aggressively massaging the treated area unless instructed

Prescription Injectable • Technique Matters

KYBELLA® Is a Prescription Injectable—Anatomy and Technique Matter

KYBELLA® should be administered by trained healthcare professionals who understand submental anatomy and injection technique. Safe treatment depends on proper patient selection, correct placement, and avoiding vulnerable structures in the chin and neck area.

KYBELLA® should not be used if there is an infection at the treatment site. Use outside the submental region has not been established as safe or effective and is not recommended.

Potential risks include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, firmness, marginal mandibular nerve injury, difficulty swallowing, tissue damage, injection-site alopecia, ulceration, or necrosis. Your provider will review risks, benefits, alternatives, and when to seek medical follow-up.
