What is Botox Cosmetics?
BOTOX® is an FDA-approved treatment from AbbVie used for both medical and cosmetic purposes. BOTOX® Cosmetic was first approved in 2002 to temporarily reduce the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet in adults aged 18 to 65. Botox Cosmetic is also FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe vertical bands connecting the jaw and neck, also known as platysmal bands, in adults. It works by relaxing targeted muscles to reduce activity that causes wrinkles or symptoms, with results typically appearing in 3 to 10 days and lasting about 3 to 4 months. This approval, granted on October 18, 2024, makes Botox the first and only aesthetic neurotoxin product with this specific indication. Visit Skin & Sculpt in Knoxville to see if BOTOX® is right for you.
What is Xeomin®?
Xeomin® is a botulinum toxin type A from Merz Pharmaceuticals that is FDA approved for treating the glabellar lines in adults ages 18 to 65, and results may last 3-4 months. The main distinction between Xeomin® and Botox® is how they’re manufactured. Xeomin® is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, while Botox is composed of a complex mixture of proteins. Essentially, this means that Xeomin® doesn’t have any additives, so it may be more suitable for those who have sensitivities to Botox®.
What is Dysport®?
Dysport® is a botulinum toxin type A from Ipsen Biopharmaceuticals that is FDA approved for treating glabellar lines in adults ages 18 to 65, and results may last 3-4 months. After injection, Dysport® appears to have a greater spread effect, leading to a more diffuse distribution of clinical effects. A single unit of Dysport® is about one-third the potency of Botox. This doesn’t mean that Botox® works better, but rather that more Dysport® is needed to achieve the same effect. As a trade-off, the price of a Dysport unit is less than that of a Botox unit, so you’ll spend about the same to achieve similar results.
What is Daxxify®?
Daxxify® is a botulinum toxin type A from Revance Therapeutics that has FDA approval for treatment of glabellar lines. The main difference between Botox® and Daxxify® is that the toxin in Daxxify®, which temporarily blocks the signals to the muscle, is attached to a protein—helping to extend Daxxify’s® effects on treated muscles. In fact, clinical trials found that Daxxify® results can last between 6-9 months, potentially lasting 2-3 times longer than Botox® for some patients. Additionally, Daxxify® is the first injectable neurotoxin formulated using a novel peptide as a stabilizer, meaning it does not contain human or animal byproducts.
While all neurotoxins work by relaxing targeted muscles, each has unique characteristics. BOTOX® Cosmetic has the longest history on the market and is FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe frown lines (glabellar lines), forehead lines, crow’s feet, and platysma bands in the neck. Your provider can help determine which neurotoxin is best suited to your individual aesthetic goals.
Even though each of these neurotoxins are similar in action, they all have nuanced mechanisms of action. BOTOX® Cosmetic is the longest on the market with FDA approval of platysma bands. Consult with your provider to discover which option is best for you.

The entire office makes me feel so comfortable when getting something new done, and they are understanding if I feel woozy ( I hate being that person 😅). I’d highly recommend them for injectables of any sort. They take time to answer your questions and the results are fantastic.
